Strokeness was established as a registered charity in January 2016, having been in existence as a non-incorporated group since September 2015. The initial inspiration came from one of the OTs at Raigmore Hospital, Paula Young, Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist, who was keen to see a group formed.
The initial committee to organise the group happened almost by default with 5 members attending the early meetings regularly, they became the committee.
The official launch of the group took place at Raigmore Hospital at an event organised to celebrate 10 years of the stroke unit.
We initially received support and a £500 grant from Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland, to whom we are affiliated, before applying for charity status in our own right: this was granted on 18 January 2016.

Since then we’ve raised a small amount of extra cash from a number of fund raising events - Christmas Fair, sponsorship etc - and organised our first events for members offering them a chance to try bowling as well as a boat trip down the Caledonian Canal. Hopefully there’ll be many more special days to come.
